Novel Fashion >> Get the "Jett Gallatin" Look

"Everything about Jett Gallatin told the world the black-clad drifter was either a gambler or a shootist- or both- but no one in their wildest dreams would think Jett Gallatin was a girl." Dead Reckoning

Annie Oakley shooting over her shoulder...cause she can!
In Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill's novel Dead Reckoning, the wild west has become the backdrop for a zombie infestation, and Jett Gallatin and her crew have been dropped smack dab in the middle of undead Alsop, Texas. Jett has disguised herself as a young man in this story in order to create the facade of a rough and tough gunslinger, her endgame being to find her missing brother (a much easier task without the added burden of too-tight corsets and layers of heavy skirts). However, she still longs for the fanciful and elaborate fashion she has been forced to leave behind, although she quickly learns it is much easier to run from a horde of bloodthirsty zombies when your dress isn't weighing you down. The western and steampunk setting creates a great basis and inspiration for designing your own frontier outfit, just as long as you remember to pack your salt for tackling those pesky zombies who just won't seem to drop dead... again.

Novel Fashion >> Get the "Araby Worth" Look

"I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror and smile. I am not the person I was this morning. I am beautiful, fake, shallow, incognito." Masque of the Red Death (Masque of the Red Death #1)

The Araby Worth Look
The backdrop for Masque of the Red Death is that of a decrepit, plague infested nameless city existing somewhere within the Victorian time period. Although not specifically labeled as Steampunk, there are clues within the novel that hint at this being the ideal look and feel for the style worn by the characters. Steam powers most technology, and the fashion is highly stylized and modified versions of clothing seen from the Victorian era, including corsets and full skirts. Araby Worth is a depressed, brooding teen who is wracked with guilt after the death of her twin brother, and who opts to follow her friend around and act as her doll to be made up and dressed to head to the streets for evenings of impropriety.

Novel Fashion >> Masque of the Red Death

Masque of the Red Death (Masque of the Red Death #1) by Bethany Griffin
This week I scheduled a photo shoot with local photographer Diana and a few members from the fashion community, including the always stylish Christine de la Creme to help create some imagery inspired by Bethany Griffin's Mask of the Red Death. The decrepit city in which the story takes place, which has become infested with the Weeping Sickness, is described so vividly and truly conjures up images of a society on the verge of extinction. The aristocracy use their wealth and status to purchase masks to prevent contact with the contagion, and spend their evenings disconnecting themselves from the horrible realities of the world by partaking in all manner of worldly pleasures at the Debauchery Club.

Novel Fashion >> Get the "Queen Levana" Look

"Kai bristled at the sight of the Lunar Queen, her head and shoulders draped in an ornate cream-colored veil, like a perpetual bride. All that could be seen beneath the shroud was a hint of long dark hair and the ghost of her features." Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles #1)

Novel Fashion >> Faction Fashions from Divergent

Insurgent (Divergent #2) by Veronica Roth
To celebrate the release of the second book in Veronica Roth's Divergent series, Insurgent, and inspired by a post seen over at YA Highway, I've arranged a few lolita outfits that I felt best represented the 5 Factions: Abnegation (The Selfless), Amity (The Peaceful), Candor (The Honest), Erudite (The Intelligent), and Dauntless (The Brave). I think my favorite is the Dauntless look, because nothing feels better than feeling like you're on top of the world!

"We rehearse in old leotards, threadbare tights, and torn leg warmers. We rarely buy new dance clothes because we know that most ballet careers are short-lived." Bunheads
